Not all of the stories and characters they've come up with are compelling (the second tale is by far the weakest), but the performances are excellent, especially by Echevarria, whose character could have merited his own movie. This is offbeat, perhaps depressing stuff, though the filmmakers (director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and pulp-novelist-turned-screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga) have added enough twists to make things interesting. But all he really wants to do is reconcile with his long-estranged daughter, who believes he is dead. In the third story, former terrorist El Chivo (Emilio Echevarria) has become a hitman-for-hire - one well-concealed in the guise of a panhandling dog-lover. Their troubles are far from over, though, as she's horribly injured in a car accident and her beloved pet is trapped between the floorboards of their new apartment. The second concerns a fashion model, Valeria (Goya Toledo), and the magazine editor, Daniel (Alvaro Guerrero), who has given up his wife and two children for her. But Octavio has crossed several competitors, and his brother (Marco Perez) may have something to say about his plans. So he agrees to have his dog compete in fights - to make enough money to run away with her and her child. The first concerns Octavio (Gael Garcia Bernal), a Mexican youth desperately in love with his abused sister-in-law (Vanessa Bauche). (The first segment involves brutal dog fights, and even though no animals were harmed, these scenes have been filmed in a disturbingly realistic manner.)Īgain, like "Pulp Fiction," this film features numerous story lines, morality tales if you will, with at least one thread running through each. And while the results may not be completely original, at least they're creative.Īlso, be cautioned that this is a very foul-mouthed, graphically violent movie, and one probably best avoided by animal lovers. Strangely enough, that experiment seems to have worked, and the final product is one of the more exhilarating movie thrillers of late. Though it shares a similar story structure with the Tarantino film, "Amores Perros" is definitely its own beast - an odd Frankenstein-like creation with bits that seemed to have been transplanted from not just Tarantino's works but also those of Pedro Almodovar. But there's no denying that it does have quite a few things in common with Quentin Tarantino's cult-adored 1994 crime piece, which inspired a whole slew of inferior knock-offs. That's not meant as a knock against this gritty Mexican thriller, which lost out to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" for this year's Best Foreign Film Oscar.
To be honest, comparisons between "Pulp Fiction" and "Amores Perros" probably wouldn't be unfair.
